Dr Margaret Anderson has a wealth of knowledge and experience across a broad spectrum of surgical treatments and with her holistic approach to medical care and surgery she is dedicated to the overall health and well-being of her patients. Here she shares her tips with patients who are pursuing surgical treatments, or with those wishing to improve themselves and their lifestyle.
A healthy body, coupled with a happy frame of mind is the foundation for living a more fulfilling lifestyle. Changing core beliefs and attitudes to focus on overall health will lead to a strong emotional state of mind. When we feel stronger inside, we can cope with life more effectively.
Good health is not just about healthy eating and exercise – it also includes having positive mental health, a healthy self-image and a healthy lifestyle.
Remove negative people from your life and the negativity from yourself. Unhealthy eating habits can occur when we are feeling down, or when we are experiencing emotional issues and stressors in our lives. We are far more likely to reach for comfort food or alcohol to help us cope. As difficult as it might be, improve your positivity and that may help temporarily to remove that resilience of food for comfort.
If you love yourself, you will reflect this love on other aspects and people in your life. Positive health starts within, so live a life with purpose for a healthy and fulfilled lifestyle.
Make sure to get enough sleep. Your mind and body rely on good quality sleep. When we do not sleep, as we should, we tend to turn to carbohydrate dense foods, to keep us going.
We are fortunate to live in a city surrounded by wonderful food producing regions. Eating fruit and vegetables in season is a great way to obtain maximum nutritional value from your produce. If you do not go to a Grower’s Market, your local supermarket will advertise (usually reliably too) as to what is in season. Experiment with flavours and add fresh herbs for a new flavour. (Remember not to eat others left over’s too, as this only serves to increase your weight).
Exercise is not just about your body, it is also about exercising your mind. We can enjoy a brisk walk as a low-cost exercise, or we use a bicycle and achieve great results. To go to the gym may work for you, but remember to attend regularly if you are a member and not just donate money. Exercise your mind regularly with puzzles, or by learning a new language. Make a real effort to remember the names of the people you meet.
When you attend your first consultation with Dr Anderson your overall health, lifestyle (including diet and exercise) are addressed, as well as your expectations of surgery. Weight loss can be an emotional journey and Dr Anderson is ready to support you with care and compassion throughout your journey
Be honest about your emotional life – are you sad, depressed, stressed, overloaded with duties or demands and always tired? The solution can begin with some “time out” to think about what your personal goals are, where you want to go and who you want to be, or just to find yourself again, to let go, to forgive and move on. This often leads to a more positive and healthy self-image and many people feel their lives are transformed. When we love, respect and admire the qualities in ourselves, we will respond to others in the same way.
For you to achieve the best post-operative results Dr Anderson prefers you to be at or close to your ideal weight. (ie your ideal BMI). The best results come from a well-nourished body. The first step of this journey is to undertake weight management with Ultra Lite Program.
Surgery should not be undertaken with the view that it will automatically solve any lifestyle or emotional issues that a person may have. For you to achieve the best post-surgery results, it is advised to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime during the lead up to your surgery and thereafter. Dr Anderson has reviewed the clinical research and science behind the Ultra Lite Weight and Health Management Program. Based on the World Health Organisation’s recommendations, this program provides all the necessary and balanced amounts of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essentially fatty acids.
The Ultra Lite program is a naturally balanced diet that does not deplete your body of vital fluids and muscle mass. For this reason, it is sustainable and unlike many other quick weight loss programs on the market, this program focuses on avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugar and limits excess carbohydrates to maximise fat loss by burning the stored fat and providing energy.
Dr Anderson can guide you through the whole process, with a permanent healthy weight loss programme and then perhaps with corrective surgery in whatever area is needed.
