BREAST IMPLANT ILLNESS

Within two years of having implants, women have reported signs and symptoms of connective tissue disease such as increased muscle weakness, fatigue and even muscle and joint pain. Also hair loss, rashes, dry eyes and mouth and cognitive decline.
There is some evidence of high risk women who develop this implant illness. A genetic predisposition to auto immune diseases (eg. Rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, Sjogrens, lupus, sarcoidosis,) may be triggered by toxicity to silicon, silicon bleed or development of a biofilm – caused by infective organisms.
Some Israeli studies have postulated that there was an instant activation of the body’s immune system when a foreign material is put in it.
When the implant and capsule are removed, 60%-80% of women improve!
Even though short term studies deny “cause and effect” longer term studies are needed. In the 1990’s in the USA no link was found.
Patients in the Netherlands who are planning a breast implant are warned about the increased risks of developing auto immune disorders if they already have allergies.
