Understanding breast implant options

If you have made a conscious choice to undergo breast augmentation, specifically, a breast enlargement, you may be wondering about which type, shape and size will be best for you.

Dr Margaret Anderson understanda that with improvements in surgical methods and breast-implant technology, there are now a wide variety of options which can sometimes become overwhelming for our patients. This is why we aim to help you understand the entire process so you can make an informed choice about your surgery. Dr Margaret Anderson will work closely with you through the consultation process to achieve an individual result based on your unique body type and surgical requirements.

Below you will find some clarification on some of the most common terms relating to the size, shape and type of breast implants

Silicon Vs Saline

Saline breast implants are considered to be more beneficial because if ruptured, the saline can be easily dissolved by the body. The only disadvantage is that saline implants are more likely to show ripples through the skin. Saline breast implants are filled with a saltwater solution similar to the fluid that makes up most of the human body. The saline breast implant is inflated with a saline (salt water) solution through a valve.

Under and over the muscle

No procedure should be over-generalized, nor is there a “one-size-fits-all” approach to any procedure. In the case of breast implants, there are two basic approaches to the placement of the breast implant: over the muscle and under the muscle the breast implant under the muscle is often associated with a more natural looking breast, however, there are some cases in which Dr Margaret Anderson may recommend a breast implant being placed on top of the muscle.

The breast implant will typically be placed below the muscle, especially in the case of thin women or women who have very little breast tissue to cover the implant. Placing the breast implant under the muscle is ideal for concealing the breast implant ripples and offers a softer, more natural draping of the implant, while decreasing the chance of the development of capsule contracture.

There is always the chance that an above the muscle technique may suit a patient’s particular needs best, so remember that only a qualified, board certified plastic surgeon can really know what approach is right for your particular anatomy!

The Shape

Teardrop Implants: Teardrop implants are contoured and are considered the most anatomical. They are shaped like a natural breast and create a sloped shape when placed over the chest muscles.

Round Implants:  Round implants are the most common implants as they generally give women the most lift, fullness and cleavage. Certain types of round implants can also enhance the forward projection of the breasts. Some women however, feel that round implants are too artificial looking. Women with large implants report that others ‘know’ they have had breast augmentation.

The Incision

There are three incisions when placing your breast implants. They are:

  • Areola: with this method, our surgeon makes the incision around the bottom half of the areola.
  • Transaxillary or “transax”: This incision is placed in the armpit.
  • Inframmary: also known as a “crease incision”:  A small incision is made in the crease of the breast.

Ultimately, the decision as to which shape, type and size implant is right for you is largely based on the look you are trying to achieve.  Dr Margaret Anderson will only offer our patients the highest quality implants and will always strive to offer advise about the perfect style, shape and size that will be best for you.
